Ballintubber 2-17 0-6 Breaffy

Our Senior teams impressive start to the new season continued in fresh, windy conditions in Clogher on Saturday evening when they comfortably overcame last years County Finalists Breaffy. With both teams minus their County players although Alan Dillon was available to the Abbeysiders where he was very much involved in a lot of the major scores. The hosts played against the strong wind in the opening half but were stilll able to lead at the interval 1-6 to 0-4 where the pace of Bryian Walsh caused endless problems for the visitors defence as he got the games first goal while he could have bagged another one only for the Breaffy custodian to effect a fine save. Other scorers included Ray Geraghty with 0-3 where 2 came from frees while Bryan Walsh also pointed with other scores coming from Alan Plunkett and full-forward Stephen Broderick. Last years Mayo Minor free-taker Liam Irwin was causing some difficulties for the Ballintubber defence, his effect was quickly closed out when the tigerish Brian Murphy marked him at the beginning of  the second half. Indeed the recently returned from injury Alan Dillon was coming more into the game and with the strong wind at their backs the hosts upped the ante. Despite a number of wides following early scores from the afore mentioned Bryan Walsh and substitute John Duffy, the visitors were not able to handle the fast movement of the Ballintubber attack . Further scores followed however with Alan Dillon kicking over his first before a smart pass from Brian Walsh found Alan Plunkett who put the game to bed with a well-taken goal. More Bryan Walsh points followed where the score now read 2-11 to 0-5 before homesides dominance resulted in more scores for Alan Dillon, Ray Geraghty, substitute Stephen Finnerty and hard-working midfielder Daire Summerville before substitute Alan Larkin and a final Alan Dillon point closed out the game. A late Alan Durcan free was followed by referee Mel Kenny's final whistle where the win puts the 'tubber boys in a strong position for the knock-out stages. Not forgetting the defence who were solid where again Paul Earley at full-back, Declan Larkin and Brian Murphy impressing in front of 'keeper Frank Walsh who to pull off a fine save towards the end of the first half.It was another steady performance from the half-back-line of Michael Plunkett, Joe Geraghty and Ruaidhri O'Connor while Dean Loftus and Daire Summerville got through a lot of work in midfield. Keep an eye on fixtures for the teams next outing!

Ballintubber team that lined out : Frank Walsh, Declan Larkin, Paul Earley, Bryan Murphy, Michael Plunkett, Joe Geraghty, Ruaidhri O'Connor, Dean Loftus, Daire Summerville (0-1), Bryan Walsh (1-4), Ray Geraghty (0-4, 2f), Damien Coleman, Alan Dillon (0-3), Stephen Broderick (0-1), Alan Plunkett (1-1). Michael Walsh League Quarter-Final Saturday April 5th

Ballintubber 2-16 012 Crossmolina

Our Senior team booked a place in the Semi-Final of the Michael Walsh League after a convincing win over visitors Crossmolina played in mild but cloudy and damp conditions in Clogher on Saturday evening. With both teams minus their County players plus other injuries, many fringe players got their chance where 2 of last years successful Minors from Mayo's success Michael Plunkett and Bryan Walsh certainly added more options to the Ballintubber panel. While the hosts were somewhat sluggish to start, reliable free-taking from Padraig O'Connor and Ray Geraghty keep the homeside in touch before a fortunate goal from a Padraig O'Connor point attempt suddenly had the score 1-3 to 0-4. After that the home side opened up the scoring with a host of scores coming from Alan Plunkett (0-2), Padraig O'Connor (0-2, 1f) while another Ray Geraghty free was added to by the alert Bryan Walsh with midfielder Dean Gavin kicking over the final point of the half to leave the interval score 1-10 to 0-5 to the boys in red. It was the West Mayo side who continued to dominate the opening stages of the second half where fine work from midfielder Daire Summerville saw him open the scoring before pressure from full-forward Stephen Broderick saw him flick the ball to the net after the ball seemed to have been in the hands of the Crossmolina 'keeper. With the game all but over as a contest Ballintubber continued to dominte where attacking half-back Michael Plunkett hammered the Crossmolina crossbar before Padraic O'Connor pointed another free. With the score 2-12 to 0-5 it was understandable that the game would peter out although further scores did arrive from Alan Plunkett (0-3) thanks to unselfish work from corner-forward Bryan Walsh while the hard-working Damien Coleman also added a point. Before the end Crossmolina and Mayo legend Ciaran McDonald was introduced to the full-forward line where he showed glimpses of the class that he still has where a number of points he scored were even applauded by Ballintubber supporters. Both sides play each other in the Senior Championship next July in Crossmolina where exchanges are bound to be much closer. Others to star for Ballintubber included full-back Paul Earley who looked very assured while corner-backs Declan Larkin and Brian Murphy had things under control. Joe Geraghty was solid in the centre while captain Ruaidhri O'Connor tried to attack when needed as did Michael Plunkett. Both midfielders of Daire Summerville and Dean Gavin worked hard throughout the hour with both adding to the scoreline. In attack all 6 forwards scored with Padraic O'Connor being top scorer with 1-5 while Alan Plunkett also added 0-5 while direct ball to the games other goal scorer Stephen Broderick at full-forward seemed to cause problems to the opposition full-back line. Other important contributions came from Ray Geraghty who kicked over 2 frees with his left-foot while Damien Coleman and Bryan Walsh also played key roles in the win.

Breaffy House Senior League Division 1A Sunday October 20th

Castlebar Mitchels 2-11 2-7 Ballintubber

Our Senior team suffered their third league defeat of the season when a sharper Castlebar side held out to claim the league points on offer and cement their position at the top. With both sides without a number of key players where the Abbeysiders had to line out without Alan Dillon, Cillian O'Connor and midfielder Jason Gibbons due to injury, it was a competitive outing in unseasonally warm, sunny conditions in Mulvey park on Sunday morning. The hosts led at the break 1-5 to 0-4 with corner-forward Tom King scoring his sides goal while the Abbeysides scorers included 3 Padraig O'Connor frees while the determined Tom Earley also got on the scoreboard. Ballintubber had as much possession as the Mitchels but were unable to probe the Castlebar defence enough to test the Castlebar netminder with Tom King at the end of good approach play to bag the games second goal at 2-6 to 0-6. Before the end substitutes Damien Coleman and Stephen Finnerty added some respectability to the scoreboard when they both found the net but the game had been decided before then. Best for Ballintubber included Brendan Walsh in goal while the defence did well considering the pressure if was under on occasion with Gary Loftus, Cathal Hallinan and Paul Earley showing well in the full-back-line. Tom Earley kicked over 2 points from centre-half-back while Ruaidhri O'Connor also showed well. Others to try hard included Diarmuid O'Connor who eventually ended up in midfield while his brother Padraig was accurate with the frees with substitutes Damien Coleman and and Stephen Finnerty impressing when introduced.

Ballintubber team that lined out : Brendan Walsh, Gary Loftus, Cathal Hallinan, Paul Earley, Brian Murphy, Tom Earley (0-2), Ruaidhri O'Connor, Danny Geraghty, Dean Gavin, John Duffy, Alan Plunkett, John Duffy, Damien McGing (0-1), Ray Geraghty, Padraig O'Connor (0-4, 4f). Subs used : Damien Coleman (1-0) for John Duffy, Stephen Finnerty (1-0) for Dean Gavin, Declan Larkin for Brian Murphy

Breaffy House Junior League Division 1D Saturday October 19th

Westport B 1-7 0-18 Ballintubber B

Our Junior team made history on Saturday evening when they gained promotion to Division 1C for the first time ever after a deserved 8 points win over homeside Westport in ideal conditions in Westport. The Abbeysiders were the better team all through but were unable to get the elusive goal that their performance deserved. However they suffered a setback early on when centre-half-back Joe Geraghty had to leave the field of play after suffering from a broken tooth following an accidental collision. It took a number of missed scoring opportunities before full-forward Ray Geraghty kicked over the games opening point with his left peg. Shortly after the hosts levelled before a host of fine points from Damien Coleman (2) with right-corner-forward Stephen Finnerty also converting his chance. However all that good work was undone when possession was lost in the Ballintubber defence with Westport taking advantage to score the games only goal. With the game all square the Abbeysiders continued to dominate with Ray Geraghty coming into his own during this spell where kicked over the halves 5 remaining scores to push the boys in red 0-9 to 1-1 ahead at the break. The opening minutes of the second half saw a rejuvenated homeside squeeze their way back into the match when they pointed 3 times in as many minutes to leave just 2 points between the sides. It was captain Tommy Kilcoyne who got Ballintubber back in their stride when he pointed an excellent score following a fine catch. Indeed this score seemed to settle the boys of the 'tubber as Stephen Finnerty also pointed a fine score from a difficult angle. It was during the spell that Westport suffered their first sending-off but they came back to score their fifth point with the game now 0-11 to 1-5. Another Ray Geraghty free was cancelled when another breakaway attack which allowed the coastal side to leave just one score between the sides. More indicipline was to follow however for Westport when their right-corner-back received his second yellow card. Ballintubber took advantage straight away where a plethora of points followed. Another Tommy Kilcoyne free was followed by points from substitutes Alan Plunkett and County Minor Bryan Walsh (0-2) who also added pace to the attack as well as Damien Coleman who also added to the tally with Tommy Kilcoyne closing the visitors scoring before Westport kicked over the games final point. This team have been knocking at the promotion door over the past few seasons and they have consistently qualified for the County Junior Championship knock-out stages where Manager John Feeney along with his selectors Lyndon Reilly and Gerry Dillon can look back on an impressive season which also included the West Mayo B Championship title in their first season at this role. The Division 1D League winners were Killala who were awarded the league points in the final round after Castlebar B failed to fulfill the fixture which is something that should not be happening at this level. Best for Ballintubber on another proud evening included minor Dave Clarke in goal whose commanding presence and lengthy kickouts was a feature. At full-back Damien Corbett rolled back the years when he put in a stormer while he was ably assisted by Keith Coleman with the experienced Seamus Thomas using this ball-catching skills to good effect when brought further out the field. Alan Larkin put in a good shift in the half-back line to cover up for the loss of Joe Geraghty while Liam Feeney and substitute Sean Kelly also had their good moments . At midfield Declan Larkin impressed again in the postion while he had good support from Daire Summerville. In attack Ray Geraghty was the star of the show when he scored a total of 0-7 with 3 from frees. However he had good support from captain Tommy Kilcoyne who also scored from frees and play with corner-forwards Stephen Finnerty and Damien Coleman causing a lot of problems for the Westport defence where they scored 0-5 between them. There were also hard-working performances from Seanie Larkin and Darren Flannery while substitutes Alan Plunkett and Bryan Walsh also caught the eye.

Ballintubber team that lined out : Dave Clarke, Keith Coleman, Damien Corbett, Seamus Thomas, Liam Feeney, Joe Geraghty, Alan Larkin, Declan Larkin, Daire Summerville, Seanie Larkin, Tommy Kilcoyne (Capt) (0-3, 2f), Darren Flannery, Stephen Finnerty (0-2), Ray Geraghty (0-7, 3f), Damien Coleman (0-3). Subs used : Sean Kelly for Joe Geraghty (inj), Bryan Walsh (0-2) for Liam Feeney, Alan Plunkett (0-1) for Daire Summerville, Jonathan Nolan for Stephen Finnerty, Ruaidhri Hallinan for Damien Coleman.

Mayo Senior Championship Quarter-Final Sunday October 6th

Knockmore 1-15 1-10 Ballintubber

Our Senior team exited the championship in McHale Park on Sunday when a hungrier and more direct Knockmore side deservedly booked a place in the last four. In truth the Abbeysiders never reached the heights expected while they were without top forward Cillian O'Connor while his older brother Ruaidhri failed a late fitness. Indeed it must be mentioned that Knockmore suffered a major setback just moments after they came to the pitch when marquay forward Aidan Kilcoyne appeared to have suffered a knee injury where he had to be strechered off. On a warm and sometimes sunny day, it was the North Mayo side who had the elements at their back as they used the stiff wind to good advantage to take the lead where county star Kevin McLoughlin opened the scoring with a pointed free. It was full-forward Padraig O'Connor who levelled within minutes before Knockmore went back in front. Play ebbed and flowed as both sides were still finding their way when County Minor Diarmuid O'Connor levelled the game with a fine point from distance. Next it was the turn of Kevin McLoughlin to kick Knockmore's next point when he also pointed from distance to make 0-3 to 0-2. Next major play saw Alan Dillon kick across a high ball towards the Knockmore goal where their 'keeper seemed to struggle with while a combination Alan Plunkett and Damien McGing made sure the ball crossed the line to push the Abbeysiders in front at 1-2 to 0-3. But the goal only seemed to spur Knockmore further as the quickly pointed twice to level as well as bringing the best out of Brendan Walsh in the Ballintubber goal. One of the highlights of the opening half saw Jason Gibbons in midfield catch before offloading to the onrushing Alan Dillon to push Ballintubber out in front which turned out to be the last time in the match. After that it was all Knockmore as they racked up another 0-5 where full-forward Declan Sweeney scored three top class points for the North Mayo side during this spell to push them 0-10 to 1-3 ahead at the break. The second half needed a strong start for an out-of-sorts Ballintubber side and they began well when again Jason Gibbons won vital possession in midfield while finding Diarmuid O'Connor who kicked over the opening point. But the comeback suffered a major setback when a high ball came off the post to an awaiting Knockmore forward who hammered it to the roof of the Ballintubber net. Credit to the boys of the 'tubber as kicked over the next 4 points courtesy of 3 Padraig O'Connor frees while Ballintubber's best player Jason Gibbons also pointed. With the score 1-10 to 1-8 in favour of Knockmore who were now facing into the stiff breeze, it was expected that the West Mayo side would push on but it was the underdogs who took the game by the scruff of the neck to quickly score the games next 4 points. This was the stage of the game that in effect decided the encounter as Ballintubber were struggling to be as direct as their opponents and as a result were finding scores harder to get. Towards the end another Padraig O'Connor free was added to by Jason Gibbons to give some respectability to the scoreboard. Knockmore has become the bogey team for Ballintubber in recent times as was the case in 2009 at this stage of the championship while recent league games have generally been won by the North Mayo side. Eitherway the championship campaign comes to a halt although the Division 1A League title is still a possibility with 4 games to go. Best for Ballintubber on the day were captain Cathal Hallinan, Gary Loftus, Brian Murphy and Tom Earley in defence, Jason Gibbons was the stand-out midfielder on the field while up front Alan Dillon,  Diarmuid O'Connor & free-taker Padraig O'Connor as well as the hard-working John Duffy stood out.

Ballintubber team that lined out : Brendan Walsh, Gary Loftus, Cathal Hallinan (Capt), Paul Earley, Brian Murphy, Tom Earley, Declan Larkin, Jason Gibbons (0-2), Danny Geraghty, John Duffy, Alan Dillon (0-1), Diarmuid O'Connor (0-2), Alan Plunkett (1-0), Padraig O'Connor 0-5, 5f), Damien McGing. Subs used : Dean Gavin for Danny Geraghty, Ray Geraghty for Alan Plunkett, Daire Summerville for John Duffy, Damien Coleman for Damien McGing.

Our Senior team suffered their second league defeat of the season when leaving blustery Knockmore on Sunday. Having been behind at the break 0-7 to 0-2 after playing against the gale force wind, the Abbeysiders came more into the game in the second half. It was full-forward Padraig O'Connor who scored 'tubber's only goal but a late goal from the hosts with just 5 minutes to go was enough to seal the points. Both sides will be meeting in a few weeks time in the Quarter-Final Senior Championship when both teams will have their full compliment of players.

Ballintubber 0-10 0-8 Claremorris

Our Senior team maintained their good form when they resumed their Division 1A League campaign after grinding out a win over a wasteful Claremorris side in blustery conditions in Clogher on Sunday to remain joint top in the Division. With the Abbeysiders having to line out without the Senior & Minor County players due to Mayo's All-Ireland final involvements, the hosts were never allowed to relax as both sides cancelled each other out for long periods where the Ballintubber full-back-line of Captain Cathal Hallinan, Paul Earley and Declan Larkin were excellent all throughout. It was the West Mayo side who led at the break 0-4 to 0-3 after they made better use of possession where a sharp looking Alan Plunkett pointed 3 times while Damien McGing also got on the scoreboard after lot of ball was fed off full-forward Padraig O'Connor. Indeed it was Padraig O'Connor who opened the second half scoring after a fine '45 was converted and the boys in red went 0-7 to 0-4 ahead following further points from Padraig O'Connor and midfielder Dean Gavin. But back came the South Mayo side with a few scores of their own to level at 0-7 apiece with 10 minutes remaining. In fact the visitors should have gone on and taken the lead but their wayward shooting came back to haunt them. It was right-half-back Gary Loftus who pushed Ballintubber back in front where the score seemed to give renewed relief to the homeside as wing forward John Duffy also popped over a fine point while full-forward Padraig O'Connor took advantage of good build-up play from full-back Cathal Hallinan to kick over his third point of the game. A late James Shaughnessy free for the visitors did mean a few anxious moments before referee Liam Devenney blew his whistle for the last time. Others to shine included goalkeeper Frank Walsh while Brian Murphy impressed again at centre-half-back while Ruaidhri O'Connor was also busy. All 3 substitutes made their mark where Stephen Finnerty, Alan Larkin and the experienced Michael Hoban helped to close the game out.

Ballintubber team that lined out : Frank Walsh, Declan Larkin, Cathal Hallinan (Capt), Paul Earley, Gary Loftus (0-1), Brian Murphy, Ruaidhri O'Connor, Dean Gavin (0-1), Tom Earley, Joe Geraghty, Damien McGing (0-1), John Duffy (0-1), Alan Plunkett (0-3), Padraig O'Connor (0-3, '45), Conor Finnerty. Subs used : Stephen Finnerty for Conor Finnerty, Alan Larkin for Joe Geraghty, Michael Hoban for Dean Gavin
