Ballintubber G.A.A. Club held their A.G.M. in Ballintubber Resource Centre on Sunday evening where a large crowd attended despite the terrible weather & driving conditions ! No major changes in any of the positions with the Senior Management position to be confirmed over the coming weeks with a few changes due to James Horan & Thomas Prendergast taking on the Mayo Senior position. However the position of Under 21 Management is up for grabs after the most successful management team in the Clubs history of Sean Hallinan, Jimmy Lally, Jim Twohig along with Pat Lally & PJ Derrig stepped down after 2 County A titles plus a final appearance this year! They will be a hard act to follow but there are enough good people within the Club to fill the void. Earlier Club Secretary Michael Duffy gave a rundown of his excellent report on the Centenary year with the obvious highlight being the Senior team winning their first ever Mayo Senior title. Treasurer Jimmy Lally gave a very detailed report into the financial side of the Club which is heavily burdened with the costs of Ballintubber Resource Centre, G.A.A. Pitch while the Astro-Turf should be complete by end of January weather permitting. However the Club are indebted to the many people who support the Club Patron Scheme as well as the weekly Lotto plus much more . It was confirmed that the official opening of the 1 million euros plus development will be in early May with further details to be announced over the coming months! A full list of officers for 2011 will be listed on the homepage over the coming weeks!

A change of date for your diary with the hugely successful Ballintubber G.A.A. Club dinner-dance 2011 to now take place on Saturday night February 12th in the Castlecourt hotel!! This will be a huge night for the Club after the tremendous centenary year for the Club culminating in our Senior team winning the ultimate in Mayo Senior football with further details to be announced in the new year!!

Our Senior team created history when they won their first ever Moclair Cup in their Centenary year amidst emotional scenes in McHale Park after overcoming Castlebar Mitchels! After years of threatening to make a breakthrough in Mayo football, the past 3 years has seen the Club win Intermediate in 2007 before making the push at the top level. The previous 2 seasons seen defeat at the Quarter-Final stage although County title success at Under 21 level was another key to Sunday's success. Scenes in Ballintubber and surrounding villages such as Carnacon, Clogher, Ballyglass and Killawalla were emotional as the Moclair Cup was carried around through the areas before party began in Corley's Lounge in Ballintubber!

The Club hosted an entertaining 'Up for the Final' event in Corleys Lounge on Friday night which was brilliantly hosted by Ballinrobe's Liam Horan . With our Senior team having finally made the breakthrough to its first ever Senior Championship final, it was decided to go ahead with the night in spite of the recent tragic death of Ger Feeney. It gave a chance to the Club to honour Ger in the opening part of the night where former teammates Tommy Lally and Al McDonnell spoke of the many fond memories during their playing days and the fierce pride Ger had of playing for the red and white. It was highlighted also that despite winning All-Ireland Minor and Under 21 Championship medals with Mayo, Ger got the greatest pride when he picked up his first ever West Mayo Junior Championship medal with Ballintubber in 1975! Of course he went on to captain the Abbeysiders to the Intermediate crown the following year which was also a first for the Club. Other speakers on the night and singers included the ageless Liam O'Toole who gave his 1990 song when the 'Tubber won the Intermediate title as well as other novel pieces during the night. Former player Kevin Brady was welcomed home from Chicago for the final and he spoke of the continued contact between the Club and other Club people there including Kevin Donnelly and former Mayo star Ger Geraghty. Current Mayo Minor Manager Tony Duffy was asked on his thoughts of the game as he had worked with the players while he was Ballintubber Manager only a few years ago while earlier some of the players mothers such as Mary Plunkett, Mary O'Connor and Maggi Geraghty gave a brief insight into some of the players lives! Former Mayo and Garrymore great as well as Mid West Radio G.A.A co-commentator Billy Fitzpatrick spoke at length of the huge pride in reaching a County Final and what it can do for an area and the importance of making sure that this happens again for the next number of years regardless of what happens in this Final. Club Chairman Sean Hallinan spoke on the immense pride in the Club of their achievements and also spoke on the huge undertaking by so many people within the Club to regularly give of their time and finance to improve facilities with real progress made in the past few years. A novel Ballintubber G.A.A. questionaire was handed around with 15 questions on all facets on the history of the Club compiled by Tony O'Connor which was won by Shane Quinn who answered 14 correct! While the Club Centenary jersey signed by all the players involved in the County Final was won by Fr. Sean O'Toole with the night ending off with many singers who were helped along by local musician Conor Duffy who provided musical entertainment for the night. It is hoped to have pictures of the night on the website over the coming weeks!!

Ballintubber G.A.A. Club regret to inform its Patrons of the sudden passing of Ger Feeney on Saturday night after a drowning accident. Ger was one of the greatest players the Club ever produced and donned the Green and Red of Mayo on numerous occasions in the 1970's and indeed played with Mayo until 1981. With Ballintubber and Castlebar Mitchels contesting this years Senior Championship final on Sunday 24th October, it sees both team captains in mourning as Gers son Alan leads the Mitchels with Ballintubber's captain John Feeney who also is a nephew of Ger. The funeral took place Tuesday evening from Coady's funeral home where thousands came along to pay their respects with the removal to Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar. Requiem mass took place on Wednesday in Castlebar church with the removal afterwards to Ballintubber Abbey cemetery. Club Chairman Sean Hallinan gave a moving oration on the life of Ger and his many football achievements . Ballintubber G.A.A. Club wish to pass on its sympathies to the Feeney family during this difficult time. Ballintubber G.A.A. Club wishes to also sympathise with the McEllin family who are also grieving during this time after the same tragedy. May they both rest in piece.

Ballintubber G.A.A. Club have set up its online shop where numerous types of Clubs accessories can be purchased which gives a great chance for people to be kitted out in the red and white for the Senior County Final on the 24th!! Follow the link on the homepage so you don't miss out!!

Club Centenary Celebrations held in Ballintubber Resource Centre on Saturday! The day began in dry, ideal conditions as our Under 16 team won the O'Connor Cup final after an entertaining game against Salthill-Knocknacarra on a final score of 4-14 to 2-9 with 2 time All-Ireland winner Paddy Prendergast presenting the medals to all the players. The next action was the Horan Cup final which was delayed due to the late arrival of All-Ireland Senior Club champions St. Galls who had travelled from Belfast that day. Despite the dreadful rain that fell, both teams entertained the sizeable crowd with the hosts winning well in the end but the Antrim side were without some key players. Afterwards the players and crowd went to the warm confines of Ballintubber Resource Centre hall where they were treated to a fantastic buffet from Abbey Lodge who fed the masses very well. Club Chairman Sean Hallinan welcomed all present with a special mention for the St. Galls team and officials as well as the many players from the 1960 successful West Mayo Junior Champions. He said it was an honour to have St. Galls not only because they are the best Club in the football sense, but because they were also hosting the Centenary this year as well. Ballintubber Captain John Feeney then accepted the Horan Cup with all players involved receiving special medals with St. Galls also being honoured where all their players received special medals for the occasion. Both Club exchanged crystal pieces before St. Galls manager Lenny Harbison spoke at length to the crowd and the huge hounour being involved in the G.A.A. President of the G.A.A. Christy Cooney was also present to speak on the importance of the Club to the community and the huge pride it brings to its people. Earlier All-Ireland Scor winner Pat McGovern gave a rendition of Robert Emmets last address as the Club were registered in 1910 as Ballintubber Emmets. Other speakers included the County Secretary Sean Feeney and West Board Chairman Ollie Dillon who are both proud Club people who spoke on the importance of never forgetting your roots. Club Secretary Michael Duffy gave a brief history on each of the players involved in the 1960 success and 1954 saga as well as others who were involved during those times with the presentation of awards with 6 players also being honoured for being part of the 1960 West Mayo team that won the County title. Later that night a lot of the crowd went to Kate Kellys for a Club Social night that went on late into the night. Centenary Programmes are still available for any who did not receive one on the day with more details on the successes back in 1960 and 1954 particularly. Email the Club at ballintubber@mayogaa.com for your copy as these are a collectors item and will be limited.

Dinner Dance 2010 took place on Saturday night where a hugely successful night was enjoyed by all. Once again the Castlecourt Hotel hosted the event in their usual professional manner where the hightlight of the night were the numerous presentations with all our successful teams in 2009 being honoured. A total of 60 players were in receipt of medals with success coming from our Senior team who won the Division 1B League title, the Junior team reclaiming the West Mayo Junior B Championship while the Under 21 team retained the top honour in the County . New Mayo Under 21 Manager Ray Dempsey was present to individually give each player their respective medals and he praised the Club on their tremendous success over the years and gave some wise words of advice. The popular Player of the Year awards at Senior and Under 21 levels were announced which were selected by the players with Cathal Hallinan winning the Senior award for his consistent displays over the season while Gary Loftus picked up the coveted Under 21 award with general agreement on the selection of both. Then the Hall of Fame award recipient was announced where Chairman Sean Hallinan gave a great introduction to the winner with Mickie Conroy getting the biggest cheer of the night as he collected the much coveted honour from County Secretary Sean Feeney. He had another surprise as the County Junior medal he won in 1946 which was lost but was amazingly found and also presented to him by the County Secretary. The Special draw on the night for all present took place with top class prizes where Patricia Jennings won the first prize and she selected the weekend in the Broadhaven Hotel in Belmullet, Tommy O'Toole won the next prize where he selected the All-Ireland Football Final tickets for next September, next prize winner was Mary Louise McDonald who selected a pair of Rugby tickets for a 6 Nations match with both Marie Finnerty and Pat Gavin both winning 2 match tickets each for a seperate Manchester United Premiership game at Old Trafford with the final prize of Gym Membership 2010 in Ballintubber Resource Centre won by P.J.
